Caleb Downs Scouting Report

Caleb Downs is the among the 2026 NFL Draft’s most indispensable talents. Safeties don’t usually track so high in draft projections, but safeties with Downs’ cohesive reel of tape and resume do. Think, ‘Minkah.’ He has been a central piece of Ohio State’s defense over this last championship campaign, and is a true leader and captain on the field. Downs takes tackling angles like a protractor, and is as alert as you will see to when it’s necessary to reduce into the box on support. He has the man coverage ability to play the alley like a CB shadowing tight ends and slot targets. He has range enough to play sideline to sideline from the post. And he is a form tackler when he knows he is last in line, breaking down in space patiently.
Athletically, Downs should impress NFL evaluators. He flashes sideline to sideline speed, through the box, that is rare on film. He’s got bite to his hits, and is dense and well proportioned for the 2nd level. If he has an area of improvement it is his ball skills, which just don’t demonstrate turnover production. But that won’t dissuade GM’s from calling his number in at least the top 15, likely higher. There are just so few college prospects as complete and ‘NFL ready’ as Downs.
