Caleb Downs is the closest thing to a lock NFL starter for 2026. He’s nearly the total package. In 2024, Downs was among the elite prospects at safety —earning an PFF 88.9 mark that ranked ninth nationally among qualified safeties, he was one of only two players at his position to record 85-plus grades both in coverage and run defense.
His coverage technique is advanced for a safety, he can mirror receivers through stems, work through zone with his eyes, and manipulate quarterbacks with subtle body positioning. His tackling displays controlled violence, uses textbook form, and he breaks down in space with precision rather than solely relying on brute strength — and he elevates this with fundamentally strong wrap-up technique, timing on his closing burst, and angle discipline. His anticipation and instincts often put him in position before the play fully develops, allowing him to take efficient angles and finish in tight spaces — the earmark traits of elite safeties and ones that allow him to operate as both a center-fielder and box-type safety.
Downs is 6-0 and plays around 205 lbs, putting him in a defensive back sweet spot with a sturdy frame that can engage in run support without sacrificing coverage agility. His 40-yard dash has been clocked as low as 4.38 seconds, with typical times in the 4.49–4.56 range, underscoring the explosive straight-line and sideline to sideline speed you see on tape.
That combination of size, speed and fluidity enables him to play downhill when needed while also sticking with tight ends (see my Texas vs Ohio State short) and slot receivers in coverage — a rare blend at the safety position. He’s not a hammer, but he demonstrates enough anchor ability to hold up near the line of scrimmage, and his agility allows for sudden direction changes and the kind of close-quarters maneuvering that stand-out safeties require.
I give Caleb Downs a blue-chip grade and believe he should be one of the first 5-10 players selected in the 2026 draft. With his advanced technique, elite physical traits, and impact production, he projects as not only a day-one starter but a potential defensive centerpiece at the next level.
