Markel Bell Scouting Report

Markel Bell saved his best act for his last act. Putting out some very good tape in Miami’s run to a championship defeat. He didn’t give up a single sack his final season, and in that playoff run he faced Texas A&M, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Indiana.

Tape Scouting Report

Bell is a younger tackle, in need of technical refinement, because he does not naturally bend and frequently plays high and out of place. He has the athleticism and length to move, and when he is in vertical and angled sets, he does a good job of playing that length to his advantage against edge defenders. Even with a high pad level, Bell demonstrates a shockwave of force in gap schemes and man blocked runs. In those situations he is a better hand fighter than his pass pro tape reveals. And his biggest hurdles remain in front recognition.

Athletic Scouting Report

It is hard to get around Bell’s atmospheric size. It is a double edged sword. His sheer mass makes him difficult to displace, and his pure length leaves him room for error on the bend. Bell is also a nimbler athlete than you would guess, even if his frame gets the better of him, compromising his balance, especially when he’s beaten to the edge by faster rushers.

Draft Stock Report

Bell has some flaws, but he shows upside as a mauling RT on the NFL level, if he is developed right. And he was a monster for Miami down the stretch. The price tag for an ACC tested tackle, with youth, size, and some development ahead of him is late day 2 or early day 3.
